Aspiring students and several media reports have revealed that more than 3000 seats are left vacant in IIT, NIT, IIIT after the 5 counselling rounds this year. Last year, the vacant seats were filled by a Spot Round but this year various Committees and MHRD took decision of ‘Not to fill vacant seats by the Spot Round’ due to technical and corruption issues. This is a regressive decision as thousands of students who aspire to study at these prestigious institutions and have qualified in the entrance exam are being deprived of their seats due to lack of a correct procedure. It is shocking how instead of looking for a correct and transparent method for filling up these seats, officials in the MHRD are trying to leave these seats vacant and blame it on the system. They cannot run away from their responsibility of ensuring that no public money is wasted. If these seats are left vacant, it is sheer wastage of public money.
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad demands from the MHRD to ensure that these vacant seats at these prestigious institutions should be filled up at the earliest through a transparent and student-friendly system. It is equally important to ensure that such a system should be in place permanently so as to avoid mental trauma to admission aspirants due to lack of clarity.
